Standards & Specifications
CDOT - M Standards: This book compiles Miscellaneous(M) Standard Plans developed by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) for use in CDOT construction projects, though others use them at their own risk. These plans are legally binding contract documents as outlined in subsection 105.09 of the CDOT Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction. For any given project, applicable Standard Plans are listed in the project plans but are not physically included, and it is the designer’s responsibility to determine their relevance. Further details can be found in the CDOT Standard Specifications book. *** Park County Public Works has the right to amend these standards for specific projects or field needs ***
CDOT - S Standards: These standard Specifications(S) are for contract work awarded by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), with modifications allowed for specific contracts. All requirements, measurements, and contractor submittals must be in United States Standard Measure (English units), though metric units may appear where required for standardized testing. Aggregate sieve sizes are shown in both units for clarity, but pay item quantities are measured only in English units. References to forms typically indicate CDOT forms unless otherwise noted, and the term "Form" is capitalized when used in this context. *** Park County Public Works has the right to amend these standards for specific projects or field needs ***
FHWA Roads & Bridges Specifications: The FP-14 Standard FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) Specifications are issued for the construction of roads and bridges on Federal Highway projects administered by the FHWA and include both U.S. Customary and Metric units. When referenced in a contract, FP-14 becomes a binding part of that contract. These contracts are also subject to the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) and the Transportation Acquisition Regulation (TAR), which are not included in the FP-14. Copies of the FAR can be obtained from the U.S. Government Printing Office in Washington, DC.
FHWA Gravel Road Specifications: In this 2015 revised manual having been developed by the FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) and South Dakota LTAP at South Dakota State University, it addresses the importance of gravel roads in low-traffic rural areas where paving is not economically feasible. As budget constraints lead some agencies to convert deteriorating paved roads back to gravel, understanding proper gravel road design and maintenance has become essential. Effective maintenance depends on both skilled grader operation and the use of high-quality surface gravel, with many issues—such as wash boarding—often resulting from poor materials rather than operator error. This manual offers guidance on creating and maintaining a good gravel road surface.
